Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) are supporting Student Fire Safety week by encouraging students to consider fire safety in their new accommodation.

Students going to university are commonly moving away from home for the first time and often have limited cooking experience or understanding of the dangers that can occur in the home.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service offer information to students to assist them in staying safe in the home, whether living in halls of residence or private rented accommodation for the first time or older students returning in their second and third years.

MAWWFRS offer the following advice about Fire Safety to students to assist them in staying safe:

  • Get to know your new property and develop an escape plan.
  • Do not overload electrical sockets or adapters.
  • Never leave cooking unattended and keep appliances clean to prevent a fire from starting.
  • Switch off all electrical items when not in use.
  • Never charge electrical devices overnight.
  • Keep escape routes clear at all times.
  • Never ‘wedge’ fire doors open.
  • If a fire starts, get out, stay out and call 999.

Home Safety manager, Wayne Thomas said:

“Every year there are a large number of fires in student accommodation, whilst we want you to have a great time and enjoy the student experience to the max, we want you to be as safe as possible. We encourage you to familiarise yourself with your new surroundings and follow all guidelines provided, stay safe and make sure your friends do the same. Make sure you remember your student life for the right reasons.”
