Request to Return to Employment (On-Call Only)

The option of “returning to employment” can be offered when an employee has voluntarily terminated their On Call Contract with MAWWFRS and requests a return to employment within four years of their last recorded day of duty. This facility is only available to employees looking to return to the role of a firefighter. Although personnel who had previously held the role of a Crew or Watch Manager are eligible to apply, their return can only be to the role of a firefighter.

Support Staff



Clerical Assistant

Western Division Clerical Assistant based at Haverfordwest Station.

Grade 3: £25,989-£26,824 (pro-rata)

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service is seeking applications from individuals for the role of part time Division Clerical Assistant within Western Division based at Haverfordwest Station.

The Role

We’re seeking a proactive and highly organised individual to provide essential administrative support across the Division. In this dynamic role, you’ll be the backbone of daily operations—managing communications, coordinating conference facilities, maintaining records, and supporting Station Managers and other key personnel. From handling mail and booking accommodation to assisting with PPE maintenance and requisitioning systems, your contributions will ensure the smooth running of divisional activities. If you're confident using office equipment, enjoy multitasking, and thrive in a collaborative environment, we’d love to hear from you.

This is a part time post working 15 hours per week (Thursday and Friday) with flexible hours in line with the Service’s flexi-time scheme.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Advisor

Human Resources Department, based at Service Headquarters, Carmarthen

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service is seeking applications from individuals for the role of Mental Health and Wellbeing Advisor within the Human Resources Department based at Service Headquarters, Carmarthen. This is a full-time permanent role.

The Role
We’re seeking a dedicated Mental Health & Wellbeing Specialist to help deliver our Authority’s wellbeing strategy, provide psychological interventions, mental health assessments, and confidential support to staff. You’ll design tailored resilience plans, support trauma response processes, and champion mental health awareness through impactful campaigns and training. Working closely with HR, Health & Safety, and specialist teams, you’ll ensure coordinated care, drive cultural change, and represent the Authority at regional and national levels. This post requires regular travel throughout the Service area.

Facilities and Compliance Manager  

Estates Department, based at Service Headquarters, Carmarthen

Grade 8: £37,280-£39,152

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service is seeking applications from individuals for the role of Facilities and Compliance Manager within the Estates Department based at Service Headquarters, Carmarthen. This is a full-time permanent role.

The Role
The successful candidate will act as the Competent Person ensuring the Estate complies with all current legislation relating to facilities management and compliance.

They will manage the facilities function of the Service, to include the procurement, evaluation, contract management and administration of the services provided.  The role will involve promoting and participating in achieving the most effective and economic use of the Service premises, facilities, plant, equipment and materials, maintaining the highest standard of operational efficiency and delivery and ensuring that the Service has the most safe and suitable working environment for its employees and their activities. They will also manage the day-to-day work of contractors delivering servicing, maintenance and associated remedials. 

This is a full-time post working 37 hours per week with flexible hours in line with the Service’s flexi-time scheme.

Role Description:

Your contributions can help drive positive change in the community, help us to plan for future activity, improve public safety and reduce the severity of incidents we attend.

The Community Ambassador will play a pivotal role in helping to shape the services we provide and assist with building a positive and supportive environment within our communities. You will act as a liaison between the Service and community members, helping to communicate important information, promote community engagement and represent the views of the communities we serve.

If you’re a representative of a local organisation, business, community group, or a member of the community, and would like to assist in helping to shape the future of Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, we would love to have you involved!

The role is on a voluntary basis.   

Commitment required
As much or as little time as you can commit. Ideally, we would like to hear from people who can commit a few hours per quarter (this will fluctuate on a quarterly basis, depending on the task/initiative) working on projects for the Service, attending meetings and events where required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain relationships with community members, local organisations and stakeholders.
  • Assist in designing and implementing initiatives that address community needs and interests.
  • Attend meetings and participate in discussions and consultations on key topics.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, operate on two shift systems:

Day Crewed System (FDCS):

Salary Allowance for Shift System – 7.5% - 42 hour working week.

The Flexible Day Crewed Stations operates on the principle that during daytime hours the station is crewed on a wholetime basis; at night stations are crewed by a combination of the Wholetime Duty System (WTDS) personnel that worked during the day and On Call personnel who are purely conditioned to that duty system. Please be advised that the Salary Allowance associated with this Shift System is 7.5%.

Due to the contractual obligation to provide On-Call cover, there is a requirement for individuals to reside locally to the Station. Please be advised that the location will need to be approved by the Service.

No salary allowance for shift system

Wholetime Firefighters provide emergency response cover on a 24 hour basis. Working a shift system of 2 day shifts (0900-1800) and 2 night shifts (1800-0900), four watches (groups of staff) ensure that there is an immediate response capability at all times of the day and night. We have an innovative approach to this national system that provides staff with flexibility and ownership, setting targets for crewing levels and encouraging staff to utilise the system to meet their needs as well as those of the organisation.
