Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) are urging communities take extra precautions when using candles.

As the evenings draw in quicker and temperatures begin to drop, many may turn to candles to make their homes feel cosier and warmer but it’s important to remember that candles are an open flame which can cause devastation if left unattended.

MAWWFRS will always discourage the use of candles due to the dangers involved. It is understandable that many people wish to use them for a variety of different reasons, whether it is part of a religious or seasonal celebration, or simply to make the home smell nice. Now is a perfect opportunity to re-evaluate the risks of using candles and consider using safer alternatives instead.

Home Fire Safety Manager Gareth Hands said:

“Candles are often used to mark special religious occasions or to create a comforting atmosphere at home, especially as the nights get longer. However, it’s important to remember that candles are an open flame and can pose a serious risk, particularly in homes with children, pets, or people living with dementia. “We strongly encourage everyone to consider safer alternatives, such as battery-operated LED candles, which provide the same effect without the danger. “If you do choose to use candles, please follow our safety advice and never leave them unattended and make sure you have a working smoke alarm on every level of your property. Our team is here to support you with free Safe and Well visits, offering tailored advice to help keep you and your loved ones safe.”

MAWWFRS also offer Safe and Well visits where the Community Safety team can provide advice either over the phone or visit your property to provide support on home safety. You can book your visit by calling 0800 169 1234 or book online at Safe and Well Visit - Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (mawwfire.gov.uk)
