On Monday, 1st December, family of late Watch Manager Des Walker joined Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s (MAWWFRS) Assistant Chief Fire Office Craig Flannery (ACFO), Service Personnel and former Chief Fire Officer Roger Thomas (CFO) at Swansea West Fire Station for a memorial ceremony.
Des sadly passed away suddenly in April 2024 whilst in Service. To honour his memory and the eight years he dedicated to Swansea West Fire Station, his family were invited to the unveiling of a commemorative stone and plaque, now proudly placed at the front of the Station.
Former CFO Roger Thomas, together with ACFO Craig Flannery paid tribute to Des with some heartfelt words. The ceremony then saw Des' son Leon unveiling the plaque alongside Des' wife Joanne and the rest of the family. Many past and present personnel also attended from across the Service which is testament to the high regard in which Des was held.
We would like to thank Gwrhyd Specialist Stone Quarry in Pontardawe for their generous donation of the stone. We would also like to express our gratitude to Watch Manager Jon Bates, and Mitch Ford, Firefighter Tom White and the Estates department for their efforts in arranging the memorial. Finally, we would like to thank Station Manager Richie Davies for coordinating the day.
