On Tuesday, August 20th, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) held a road traffic collision training exercise in Pont-iets, Carmarthenshire.

Attended by crews from Pont-iets, Tumble, Kidwelly and Llanelli Fire Stations, the training exercise was designed to enhance crew members’ emergency response skills.  The exercise simulated a road traffic collision (RTC) involving two cars and one moped, with one of the vehicles coming to rest on its side.  Each vehicle had simulated casualties trapped inside, with the driver of the moped being thrown from the vehicle, requiring Firefighters to assess the scene and surroundings to locate them.

The realistic scenario allowed Firefighters to practice critical techniques such as vehicle stabilisation, casualty extrication and administering First Aid.  The training emphasised teamwork, quick decision-making and the safe use of specialised RTC equipment.  It also allowed for Station Managers to observe the skills of newly qualified Firefighters and to provide feedback as part of their ongoing training development.  A team debrief was held at the end of the exercise to discuss the session and provide valuable feedback.

By taking part in these realistic scenarios, Firefighters are better prepared to respond to actual RTCs, ensuring the safety of the public and the communities of Mid and West Wales.

MAWWFRS thanks Gwendraeth Valley Tarmacadam for the use of their site and for their assistance in setting up the simulated collision.
