Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue (MAWWFRS) crew members across several stations have been touched by a thoughtful act of kindness after floral arrangements and planters were left on their doorsteps by a visitor believed to have links to the Fire and Rescue Service.
Over recent challenging weeks, bottles containing flowers and planted flowerpots have appeared at several of our Northern Division stations, bringing a welcome surprise to the crews and adding a splash of colour to station grounds! While little is known about the individual behind the gesture, it is understood that he may be a former firefighter and that the initiative is connected to a charity that promotes positive mental health and wellbeing.
A firefighter from Crickhowell Fire Station was able to speak with the visitor and learned that the floral gifts were intended to encourage and celebrate positive mental and physical wellbeing.
The gesture is believed to have begun during the recent period of wildfires, offering a thoughtful show of support to crew members who worked through a particularly demanding period. Accompanied by labels carrying messages of wellbeing and the hashtag #NotSam, the flowers and planters served as a reminder of the importance of taking time to look after both physical and mental health.
Stations known to have received floral arrangements include Talgarth, Hay-on-Wye, Crickhowell, Llandrindod Wells, Builth Wells and Brecon Fire Station.
Crews have greatly appreciated the unexpected gifts, which have brought smiles to stations, boosted morale and highlighted the positive impact that even small acts of community kindness can have on wellbeing during challenging times.
