On Thursday, 16th July, ten Mid and West Fire and Rescue (MAWWFRS) firefighters from Wholetime Course 02/24 successfully completed their final assessments and achieved competent firefighter status following a two-year apprenticeship programme.
Firefighters Ellie Aston, Dan Thomas, Dan Hart, Bryn Davies, Aiden Mason-Jones, Martyn Jenkins, Nathan Jones, Henry Torkington, Sabrina Brooke and Can Tenbelogu all underwent their two-day final assessment at Earlswood Training Centre, demonstrating the knowledge, skills and behaviours required of a competent operational firefighter. Having successfully met the required standards, they have each been awarded the SFJ Level 3 Diploma in Emergency Fire Service Operations.
The two-year apprenticeship programme was delivered in partnership with Gower College Swansea and provided the foundation for the firefighters' development from recruits to fully competent operational firefighters.
Throughout their apprenticeship journey, the firefighters received ongoing support from MAWWFRS’s People and Organisational Development (POD) department, alongside Station Manager Gareth Minney, helping them develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in their roles.

Reaching this milestone is a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment they have shown. It’s been a pleasure to support them throughout their journey and to see the confidence, knowledge and skills they have developed along the way. This achievement was also supported by the apprenticeship partnership with Gower College Swansea, who provided support and guidance throughout the programme. The firefighters should be immensely proud of everything they’ve achieved. I wish them every success for their future careers and look forward to seeing them continue to grow and thrive within the Service."
